Birgit Lohmann
Birgit Lohmann is founder and editor-in-chief of designboom, based in Milan (HQ), New York, Beijing and Tokyo. Established in 1999, designboom.com is the world's first cultural online magazine for art, architecture and technology.
Born in Hamburg, Birgit Lohmann studied industrial design in Florence before moving to Milan, where she has lived and worked since 1987. She was making design projects with the ‘godfathers’ of Italian cool: Achille Castiglioni, Elio Fiorucci, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Bruno Munari and Renzo Piano. She has also worked as a design historian for justice departments and international auction houses. As a researcher and lecturer, she has conducted seminars on industrial design at a number of prestigious international universities.

In April 2014, a Chinese edition has been launched, and designboom.cn has already been one of the most popular online design and architecture magazines in mainland China. The site sees a selection of articles from the established English publication translated into Mandarin, supplemented by local content that covers developments in the region’s creative scene, to give it added relevance to its targeted audience. designboom China brings the best of art, architecture, design and technology to the Chinese community.
designboom undertakes innovative cultural exhibition projects and brings together designers and design entrepreneurs from around the world. Inventing the pop-up phenomenon, since 2005, designboom's readers have participated in our acclaimed temporary mart exhibitions inside international trade fairs in New York, Stockholm, Sydney, Tokyo, and Toronto.
