At the beginning of the new century, in the world that lived through Modernism and Post-Modernism, what does Modern mean at all?
If we adopt the Modernists optimism and their idea that the world can be transformed and improved by human intervention, how do we translate those values to contemporary societies? In the era of superabundant information and declining natural resources, how do we achieve progress and is Modernism's social agenda still relevant? What is the role of design, architecture, and communications in general, in re-shaping our world?

Jovan Jelovac, Chairman of the Festival:
The conference that you attended and its satellite program of exhibitions Belgrade2 were created by our dedicated team. It is a product of the incredible energy of our partners, volunteers, patrons… the entire city of Belgrade, which – for the third time in the row – that lived and breathed design and creativity, at least during this week.
We all understand the political and economical reality we live in, in which the third Belgrade Design Week took the place – perhaps the only professional, but popular festival of knowledge. That is why I would like to tell you one more thing – this is exactly the moment when we, as a society, need to be responsible to our future and make a clear, decisive step towards a modern life.
MODERN², if at all possible. |
