Veran Matic RDC “B92” General Manager & Editor-in-Chief E-mail: veran.matic@b92.net Web site: www.B92.net During the ten-year period Mr Matic was the President of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), that gathers around 50 independent local radio and TV stations round the country at the moment. Editor-in-Chief, and now General Manager of the leading Belgrade radio and TV station B92 (RTV B92), incorporating radio and television stations, online service, publishing and culture activities, concert agency and the REX cultural center. He was born in 1969 in Sabac, Yugoslavia. He studied World Literature at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade. CareerMr Veran Matic has been engaged in journalism since 1984 with alternative and youth media in Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana. He began his career with NTV Studio B, Belgrade’s formerly independent television station. In May 1989 he founded Radio B92, the first independent radio station in Serbia. The station was clamped down several times, but it managed to carry on the program transmission up to the point when it was illegally taken over by a group of people close to governing structures in April 1999. In spite of prohibition, the station continued program broadcasting over the Internet until it was retrieved again. Radio B92 has founded and developed several centers under its guidance: Internet center – OpenNet, the first Internet provider in the country Samizdat B92 – publishing sector with numerous titles, including books dealing with research of the wars in former Yugoslavia, also books on minority rights, and, in addition, it started three magazines. REX cultural center - a place where alternative and progressive cultural scene performances and happenings are being held Film and video production – numerous national and international awards winner CD production – that promotes young and up-and-coming artists in SCG Mr Veran Matic is the winner of numerous prestigious international awards for his work during the last ten years. The most significant ones are: 1993 – Committee to Protect Journalists – CPJ (New York head office), Annual award 1998 – “Olof Palme Memorial Fund” Award, that he received for the professional journalism together with Viktor Ivancic (Editor-in-Chief of Croatian independent weekly “Feral Tribune”), and Senad Pecanin (Editor-in-Chief of Sarajevo’s weekly “Dani”) 1999 – At the Annual Assembly of the World Economics Forum he was proclaimed one of the hundred Global Leaders of Tomorrow (GLT), alongside other representatives of Yugoslavian region, Veton Suroji (Editor-in-Chief of Kosovo’s daily Koha Ditore) and Sasa Vucinic (“Media Development Loan Fund” General Manager) 1999 – Award by Annenberg School of Journalism, University of California, for courage in journalism (USC Annenber School for Communication) 1999 – Social Justice Award Children Uniting Nations 1999 – Ilaria Alpi Award, dedicated to TG3 RAI reporter who died under questionable circumstances in Mogadishu 2000 –World Press Freedom Hero Award (One out of 50 Heroes), International Press Institute (IPI) 2004 – City of Belgrade Award for Journalism in 2003. The explanation states that the award has been given to Veran Matic, as a team person in charge, for his exceptional maintenance of independent editorial concept at RTV B92.
