Fernando Gutiérrez / PENTAGRAM


Fernando Gutierrez is Spanish by origin, but born in London in 1963. He studied graphic design at the London College of Printing, and graduated with honors in 1986. He worked with CDT Design from London, where he became partner in 1991 and with Summa from Barcelona. In 1993 he co-founded Grafica in Barcelona and also worked on projects of identity, publishing, communications campaigns and was the editor of a design magazine.

In November 2000, Fernando became the Creative Director of the Benetton’s Color magazine, the concept of which was created by Oliviero Toscani and the Tibor Kalman.

Currently the designer and the Art Director of the Matadora, a literature and photography magazine published annually in Madrid.

He worked on numerous editorial projects for the Spanish daily El Pais, as a Designer and Art Director, with a vast specter of daily columns and weekly supplements including: Tentaciones, a supplement for the younger readers and Sunday magazine supplement of EPS, with 1.2 million of readers worldwide. Fernando is a Director-Consultant for the national museum the Prado in Madrid. Recent works includes: position of Art Director for the Vanidad fashion magazine; catalogs which were exhibited in a museum of contemporary art, Reina Sofia in Madrid; a series of pocket editions of memoirs from the art of photography for PhotoBolsillo; photo-biography of Gandy for international publisher Phaidon Press; packing material and labels for different wines of Spanish wineries Companja de Vinos Telmo Rodrigez; material for promotion of BP Portrait Award 2002 in National Portrait gallery in Paris; identity for bus and train network CTA which is working in the area of Asturija at the north of Spain; and a new identity and stile for cover for the book for Losada, publishing house which research the history of Hispanic languages.

Fernando was a president of the European Art Directors Club since 1998 till 1999. He is also a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts organization in London.

He joined the Pentagram and became a partner for its office in London in October 2000.
